Apocalyptica est un groupe metal atypique qui se forme en 1995 en Finlande.
La formation armée de ses trois violoncellistes débute sa carrière avec un coup de maître : un album mélodique de reprises de Metallica.
Sorti en 1996, ce premier opus nommé Plays Metallica By Four Cellos est encensé par la critique, Metallica eux même et un public agréablement surpris.
Apocalyptica revient deux ans plus tard, en 1998, avec un second album nommé Inquisition Symphony.
Les reprises sont cette fois-ci plus variées (Sepultura, Faith No More...) même si quelques morceaux des four horsemen sont encore présents.
La formation en profite aussi pour placer des compositions de leurs créations, en totale adéquation avec le reste de l'album.
En 2000 sort Cult, un disque assez décevant qui évite le flop total grâce à un duo avec Sandra Nasic, la chanteuse de Guano Apes.
Deux plus tard, Apocalyptica signe un DVD live suivi d'un nouvel opus nommé Reflections.
Cet album est entièrement consacré aux créations du groupe qui se crée sa propre "personnalité"
Le groupe invite toutefois Dave Lombardo (Slayer) sur plusieurs morceaux de l'album.
En 2005, le groupe publie un album éponyme.
